![]() Sir Ivan Whiteside Magill (1888 – 1986) was an Irish born anaesthetist who is famous for his contribution to the development in modern anaesthesia. He helped to establish the Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland in which he was a faculty and was responsible for the development of first professional examination in anaesthesia namely the Diploma in anaesthesia. His employment at Sidcup, as an anaesthetist for surgery of facial injuries, was the beginning of endotracheal intubation. Blind nasal intubation was first developed and described by Magill in 1928, which was demonstrated to the Society of Anaesthetics in 1932. He served the Westminster and Brompton Hospitals throughout the Second World War, retired from his post in 1955. Many anesthetic equipment was named after him. His contribution were Endotracheal tube anaesthesia (The Magill endotracheal tube, oral & nasal designs) Anaesthesia breathing system (Magill circuit and expiratory valve) , Intubating Forceps , Laryngoscope a straight bladed version , Catheter mount , Endotracheal tube connectors, Magill tracheal spray , Thoracic anaesthesia, Endobronchial tubes and bronchial blockers , Bobbin flowmeters. |
